Black is a classic color that you can’t go wrong with—unless, of course, it appears in the form of pesky lines or dots on your copies. If your copier is producing jobs that look more like pin-striped suits than office documents, there’s an easy solution. It won’t even take much time. Here’s how.

1. Determine the Source of the Problem

Dust is the enemy of printers, so you are probably working with that likely culprit. Other options include print assembly issues which are more complicated. If you print a blank page, and the streaks don’t appear, it’s a dust or grime issue, and you can move on to step 2. Otherwise, call your technician.

2. Clean Your Printer

When you’re cleaning the printer, the first thing you must be sure of is that you’re using the right material and cleaner. Never clean your printer with any abrasive material or cleaning solution such as ethyl alcohol, benzene, acetone, or ammonia. Don’t place any liquid directly onto the glass area of your scanner to avoid frying the interior of your copier.

With a non-abrasive glass cleaner, gently wipe your glass scanning bed clean. Then dry the glass with a dry cloth.

If you have a copier with an automatic document feeder (ADF), you’ll want to clean this as well. This is a narrow strip of glass near the left of the main glass.

3. Test

If dust and grime are causing your issue, these fixes should give you clean prints. If you’re still having issues after a few test prints, call your technician for further assistance.
