How to Avoid Malware Risks

Understanding how to avoid malware is important to any business with a single computer. (And let’s be honest, that is everyone these days). However, before we can consider delving into the ways you can avoid malware in your company computers, we want to make absolutely certain that you understand what malware actually is.

“Malware” is short for malicious software, and it refers to a virus, spyware, worm, trojan horse, etc. Malware is designed to cause damage to any computer, whether a stand alone PC or networked device. The intent of all malware is to damage your computer, and it is much easier to avoid than to remove it.

How does it attack?

Malware can enter your computer through a corrupted link, an image attachment, an audio file, other internet downloads, or even an external drive. With all of the potential risks, we came up with a list of tips to help you ensure your company’s security.

Preventative Measures

1. Install, update, and use your anti-virus software. Most of us have anti-virus software for just this reason, to prevent unwanted risks from damaging precious data. It is just as important to keep your software up to date and run regular scans on your computer.

2. Secure your network. Most businesses have wifi that all of their computers and many other devices (such as printers and cell phones) are connected to. Make sure your network is password protected so that only your trusted employees have access to it. If your business offers free wifi to customers, it’s best to offer an alternative guest network for their use.

3. Use smart behavior online. Malware can be hidden in emails and websites. Be cautious, especially if you are unsure of a link or website. Do a quick Google search to see if it can be trusted. If you are supspicious of something a company is asking you to install, call them first. Many anti-virus softwares will scan downloads for you as well to tell you whether or not it is safe.

4. Back up your files. Sometimes malware does get through without your knowledge. There’s no telling the damage that it will do to your computer and your data, so it is important to keep your files backed up in the event that something does happen. Even if you never face malware issues, doesn’t it just put you at ease knowing that you won’t lose everything?
