People are a company’s most expensive asset. When they spend extra time trying to program a job or clear a jam, that’s wasted money. These are some of the usability items we look for during our analysis. The results are in:
Document Feeders
Operation Panels
Engine, Mainframe, Jam Clearance
Consumables
Mobile Support
Productivity
How well does the product perform, relative to the specification to which it was designed? How much time do end users spend waiting vs. working?[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”25px”][cz_stylish_list id=”cz_98014″ items=”%5B%7B%22title%22%3A%22Print%20Productivity%22%2C%22subtitle%22%3A%22Under%20real-world%20conditions%22%2C%22icon%22%3A%22fa%20czico-178-check%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Copy%20Productivity%22%2C%22subtitle%22%3A%22Under%20various%20output%20selections%22%2C%22icon%22%3A%22fa%20czico-178-check%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Scan%20Productivity%22%2C%22subtitle%22%3A%22From%20simplex%20to%20duplex%22%2C%22icon%22%3A%22fa%20czico-178-check%22%7D%5D” sk_lists=”font-weight:600;” sk_icons=”color:#e7323b;”]
The MP 402SPF delivered fast simplex scanning speeds in black and white at 42 ipm. The Lexmark ran a bit slower at just 34 ipm, a difference of 8. Color scan speeds showed even bigger advantages for the MP 402SPF. At 42 ipm it dominated the Lexmark which only reached 15 ipm, a difference of 27 ipm.
Duplex scanning was an even more dominant area during our testing. At 83 ipm the MP 402SPF was more than 4 times faster than the Lexmark (19 b&w and 9 color). Probably because the document feeder on the Lexmark is a dual pass and the MP 402SPF has an single pass. The MP 402SPF was very consistent when scanning.
Speeds were consistent when compared to ipm speeds quoted on brochure/ spec sheet. The Lexmark MX511 however posted lesser ipm speeds than we expected. Our dpi settings (300) caused the Lexmark to perform at a slower rate. The faster specs printed on the Lexmark brochures are based off of settings and selections different from the ones we use during testing.
The CAT Lab suggests that scans should be saved at 300 dpi or higher to ensure document readability and quality. The MP 402SPF also showed advantages when it came to scan file sizes. Ricoh wins again!

The MP 402SPF provided excellent results when copying various originals. Fonts and lines looked good and copied images were merely identical to the original. The Lexmark MX511 copies were over saturated and fonts showed visible knockouts.
Ricoh outperforms the Lexmark MX511 in image quality.
THE RESULTS ARE IN:
Winning 5/7 rounds, including one draw, the RICOH MP 402SPF is the clear winner. Most notable advantages the Ricoh has when compared to the Lexmark is the additional mobile capabilites, as well as an outright shoutout in the production categories – that’s in large part to that amazing single pass document feeder scanning two pages at once.
